The Republican Tea Party Choice: Erik Paulsen

Sat, 04/17/2010 - 8:43pm
GOP endorses Minnesota’s most underwhelming candidate

St. Paul (April 17, 2010) — Today, the Republican Party of Minnesota will officially endorse Erik Paulsen for Congress in Minnesota’s third congressional district. The DFL Party released this statement from Chair Brian Melendez:

“Erik Paulsen has been underwhelming and ineffective for the people of the third district, even by the low standards set for the freshman representative. As a member of the Financial Service Committee, Paulsen had a unique opportunity to reform Wall Street, but he sided with big business and stood against Minnesota families. While waxing poetic about his concerns over government spending, Paulsen spent more money than all but two other representatives — half a million dollars! —to sing his own praises in mail to the district.

“Paulsen has consistently chosen rhetoric over responsibility and has delivered nothing but bad news to the people of the third district. But the Republican Party has chosen him as its standard-bearer, so today I am proud to be a Democrat, and I look forward to working against this wasteful, out-of-touch representative.”

Balanced Leadership, Democratic Values: Representative Betty McCollum

Sat, 04/17/2010 - 7:14pm
DFL Party endorses Betty McCollum for reelection and will bring the campaign to the doors of voters in the fourth congressional district

St. Paul, Minn.  (April 17, 2010) - Today the DFL Party officially endorsed Representative Betty McCollum for reelection to Congress from Minnesota’s fourth congressional district.  State DFL Chair Brian Melendez released this statement:

“Betty McCollum has been a champion of Minnesota’s values in Congress since she was elected in 2000 — and a leader on education, environment and fiscal responsibility issues all her life. She has been a strong voice for citizens in the fourth district and throughout the state, supporting legislation to improve the lives of all Minnesotans. The historic health-care vote in March represents the culmination of years of Representative McCollum’s hard work advocating increased access to health care. She worked throughout the debate to ensure that women were treated fairly and equitably under the newly reformed system and, as usual, she delivered results. Representative McCollum has been a relentless fighter for the rights of Minnesota’s working families, children and seniors. The DFL Party is proud to endorse her for re-election.”

Today’s endorsement decision officially kicks off the ground campaign in the fourth district. Moving forward from today’s convention, volunteers will gather in the district to begin calling their neighbors to continue building support for Representative McCollum and the DFL Party.

The Republican Tea Party Choice: Randy Demmer

Sat, 04/17/2010 - 5:56pm
GOP endorses Minnesota’s most hypocritical candidate

St. Paul (April 17, 2010) — Today, the Republican Party of Minnesota officially endorsed Randy Demmer for Congress in Minnesota’s first congressional district. The DFL Party released this statement from Chair Brian Melendez:

“Randy Demmer is about as inconsistent and hypocritical as they come. As a state legislator, Mr. Demmer regularly pandered to the far right instead of working for the needs of his constituents. Now he is trying to paint himself as a mainstream candidate. As a legislator, Mr. Demmer vehemently opposed creating jobs in the bonding bill, citing concerns over fiscal responsibility -- but as a taxpayer, Demmer had no problem taking millions of dollars in business and farm subsidies. And while opposing what he calls ‘government handouts,’ Randy Demmer took legislative per-diems when he was out of the state attending a partisan event.

“Randy Demmer’s actions do not match his words, and he will say and do anything to get himself elected. But the Republican Party has chosen him as its standard bearer, so today I am proud to be a Democrat, and I look forward to working against this hypocritical candidate.”

DFL Party Lauds Constitutional Amendment for Equality, Encourages Legislators to Support It

Wed, 04/14/2010 - 2:24pm
St. Paul, Minn. (April 14, 2010) — Today, the Minnesota Senate Committee on Judiciary will hold a hearing on S.F. 3191, the Constitutional Amendment for Equality (CAFE). The DFL Party praised S.F. 3191 and encouraged senators to support it.

“While the law has advanced far in guaranteeing equal rights for women, it still took an act of Congress just last year to vindicate the principle of equal pay for equal work, even though that principle was supposedly enacted into law four decades ago,” said State Chair Brian Melendez. “The DFL Party strongly supports Senate File 3191, the Constitutional Amendment for Equality.”

As the leader of the Agriculture Committee, he is on the front lines working hard on issues important to Minnesotans. In the past two years alone, Representative Peterson has been an integral part of historic legislation, crafting a Farm Bill that ensured a strong agricultural economy, promoted conservation, and provided millions of families and children with the food assistance they depend on during these difficult economic times. Representative Peterson has worked to reform the nation’s futures markets, promote the development of renewable energy, and improve our food-safety system, and the DFL Party is proud to support him for reelection.”

Dan Powers is ready, willing and able to deliver it.

“Dan Powers is an energetic and dedicated leader who will work everyday for his constituents and deliver real results. “Jim Meffert is has been a strong leader for DFL values, with hands-on experience on some of the issues most important to Minnesotans — education and health care. DFLers Rally Against the Bachmann-Palin Republican Tea Party Agenda

Wed, 04/07/2010 - 2:44pm
Minneapolis (April 7, 2010) -- DFLers voiced their opposition to the Bachmann-Palin Agenda in Minneapolis today. Sarah Palin came to town with Sean Hannity, Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann to rally the Republican Tea Party faithful in the latest in each of their national travels to promote an agenda that has failed to offer any effective solutions for Minnesotans during difficult economic times.

"Today, Michele Bachmann is once again off pursuing her own agenda, charging $10,000 for a photograph with Sarah Palin while those in her district are suffering from the highest unemployment and foreclosure rates in Minnesota," said DFL Party spokesperson Donald McFarland. "Representative Bachmann has missed more votes than any member of Minnesota's congressional delegation, but she always manages to find time for her Republican Tea Party events and media appearances. Minnesotans in the sixth district deserve better -- they deserve someone who will show up for work."

In three years Representative Bachmann has yet to offer a single effective solution to fix the national health-care system, put Minnesotans back to work or keep families out of foreclosure and bankruptcy. In her own words, she said "I don't have substantive bills that I have passed." It's clear that Michele Bachmann's priority is to pursue her extreme Tea Party agenda, regardless of the consequences for the people she represents.

DFL Party Breathes Sigh of Relief as Minnesota GOP Narrowly Defeats Resolution to Grant “the Right of States to Secede From the Union”

Thu, 04/01/2010 - 3:01pm
GOP Chair Tony Sutton Saves the Day at Second Congressional District Convention

St. Paul (April 1, 2010) — The DFL Party breathed a collective sigh of relief this week as the Minnesota GOP came within two votes of supporting a resolution which Republican Chairman Tony Sutton described as “the right of states to secede from the union.”

“Our party is greatly relieved that at a time when unemployment under Governor Pawlenty soars and the foreclosure rates in Representative Michele Bachmann’s district are sky high, we don’t have to tackle this issue,” said DFL spokesperson Donald McFarland.  “We only wish that Tony Sutton had that kind of common sense when it came to supporting the new legislation ensuring that Minnesotans will finally be able to afford quality health care for their families.”

Sat, 03/27/2010 - 3:13pm
DFL Party Endorses Tarryl Clark and Will Immediately Bring the Campaign to the Doors of Voters in the Sixth Congressional District

Blaine, Minn. (March 27, 2010) -- Today, the DFL Party officially endorsed Tarryl Clark for Congress in Minnesota's sixth congressional district. State DFL Chair Brian Melendez released this statement:

"Minnesota needs leaders who will work to create jobs, build opportunities and provide balanced leadership, especially during these difficult economic times. For far too long, the people of the sixth district have had an absent, ineffective representative in Congress, while suffering the highest foreclosure rates in Minnesota. They deserve a leader who will work every day to bring jobs back to the sixth congressional district. Tarryl Clark is that kind of leader.

"Throughout her tenure as a legislator, Tarryl Clark has been a strong advocate for working families, veterans, seniors and children. She has the experience, skills and -- most importantly -- the work ethic to start putting Minnesotans in the sixth congressional district back to work. It's time to finally take back the sixth district, and Tarryl Clark is the right person for the job."

Today's endorsement decision officially kicks off the ground campaign in the sixth district.  Immediately following today's convention, volunteers will hit the streets in St. Cloud to begin knocking on doors and calling their neighbors to continue building support for the DFL Party and the next representative from the sixth district, Tarryl Clark.

"For four years, Tim Walz has been a fearless leader in Congress, working tirelessly to protect our nation's veterans and working families, and delivering results for his constituents. In his two terms, Representative Walz has been an integral part of several pieces of historic legislation -- working to create jobs, boost the economy and improve roads in the first district through the Recovery Act; and reining in rising health-care costs and eliminating insurance companies' worst practices with comprehensive health-insurance reform. Marty Seifert Flip-Flops … Again!

Wed, 03/24/2010 - 4:50pm
He was for it, before he was against it, and now he's for it again

St. Paul, Minn. (March 24, 2010) — Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted on the General Assistance Medical Care compromise. Republican gubernatorial candidate Representative Marty Seifert, who voted for GAMC last month, then against GAMC a few weeks ago, flip-flopped again today to vote for the compromise bill. The DFL Party released this statement from Chair Brian Melendez:

“Representative Marty Seifert has reversed himself twice now on GAMC in less than a month. But Minnesotans deserve to know what to expect from their leaders, and we can’t tell what to expect from Marty Seifert, except that he won’t stand on principle. His flip-flopping votes reveal him as a crafty politician playing follow-the-leader, instead of voting for the people of Minnesota based on what’s best for our state. Whatever he is up to, it isn’t leadership. His inconsistency on this important issue alone tells us that Marty Seifert will promote his personal ambitions without regard for principle or for the public good.”

Bachmann’s Continued Absenteeism is Still Inexcusable

Tue, 03/23/2010 - 6:39pm
Bachmann continues to rack up missed votes in Congress

St. Paul, Minn. (March 23, 2010) — Last night, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to provide cost of living adjustments for veterans compensation. The measure unanimously passed, 407– 0. Michele Bachmann missed the vote.

Minnesota’s most absent representative made time yesterday to attend a breakfast fundraiser, call-in to Sean Hannity’s radio show, and appear on Fox News Channel’s Fox and Friends.  But somehow, Bachmann could not find the time to show up for a vote to adjust the rates of compensation for disabled vets and surviving spouses and children.

Inexcusable.

Once again, Michele Bachmann was not there for her constituents. She was the only Minnesota representative to miss last night’s vote.

Inexcusable.

Republicans Kick-Off Latest Tea-Party Stunt on Health-Insurance Reform

Tue, 03/23/2010 - 12:48pm
Minnesota GOP chooses to support tax hikes and fewer jobs to pander to right-wing extremists

St. Paul (March 23, 2010) — Today, Republicans launched their latest political stunt, calling for a lawsuit opposing the federal health-insurance reform bill. The DFL Party today released this statement from Associate Chair Donna Cassutt:

“In an act of desperation, today’s political stunt is simply the latest obstructionist tactic in the Tea Party efforts to derail historic health-care legislation. Instead of supporting this legislation, which will provide immediate benefits to people in Minnesota and across the United States, Republicans have chosen a position that would raise taxes and push senior citizens back into the Medicare Part D doughnut hole.  Instead of supporting this health-care legislation, Republicans are working to pull young Americans off of their parents’ insurance plans, reinstate the denial of insurance coverage for children with pre-existing conditions, and increase the burden on small businesses during difficult economic times. That is what the Republican Party is standing up for — and if that’s what they’re choosing to run on in November, bring on the fight.”

DFL Statement on Historic Health-Insurance Reform

Sun, 03/21/2010 - 10:22pm

House passes most significant piece of domestic legislation in decades

St. Paul (March 21, 2010) — The DFL Party released this statement from Chair Brian Melendez on Congress’s enactment of health-insurance reform:

“Today's vote is a resounding win for the hardworking families struggling with out-of-control health-care costs, and a dramatic step forward for the President as he continues to deliver on his promise to reform our nation’s broken health-insurance system. Thanks to the President and the Democratic leaders in Congress, that broken system has begun a much-needed and long-awaited overhaul, and Americans across the country are one step closer to receiving quality, affordable health care.

“With today’s reforms, middle-class families in Minnesota and across the country will no longer be forced to decide between paying their mortgage or their health-care bills. Americans are no longer at the mercy of insurance companies, worrying about being dropped from their insurance or denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. The President’s plan will make insurance affordable for hardworking Americans, and will help small businesses during these difficult times. Today’s success is a testament to the Democrats’ reasoned, balanced approach to tackling one of the most difficult public-policy issues of modern times.”
