Minimum Wage Constitutional Amendment

WHEREAS one purpose of the U.S. Constitution is to ensure a minimum level of protections and liberties to demographic minorities whose representation is insufficient to secure such protections and liberties legislatively; and

WHEREAS minimum wage workers constitute such a demographic minority; and

WHEREAS review and adjustment of the federal minimum wage by Congress has been sporadic, the last increase having been enacted in 1997; and

WHEREAS between 1968 and 2005, the real value of the federal minimum wage has fallen by 42% to its lowest level in at least 50 years;

BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The U.S. Constitution shall be amended such that Congress must establish a federal minimum hourly wage no less frequently than once every five years.
