What does a precinct chair do?

A precinct chair is a vital link in in the DFL party structure. Our party only succeeds only if we're organized at the precinct level.  A precinct chair helps with that organizing.   It starts with the precinct caucus on February 2nd, 2010.   The caucus elects the precinct chair and then he/she runs the caucus meeting.  That's just the start.  Precinct chairs keep in contact with candidates, neighbors and play a central role in getting out the vote on election day.

What is a precinct?

The precinct is the base unit in the DFL's pyramid structure. A precinct is comprised of the voting precinct, which can be a township, an entire town, or a voting precinct within larger communities. Most precinct DFL Party activity occurs in even-numbered years, when precinct caucuses are held. (In the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, precinct caucuses also take place in odd-numbered years in which city elections take place.)

The DFL caucus and convention process begins at precinct caucuses: caucus attendees elect a precinct chair and associate chairs, discuss and adopt resolutions, and elect delegates and alternates to a county-unit convention.

The precinct chair serves as that precinct's representative to its county-unit central committee. The precinct chair is also responsible for organizing the precinct for the party during the election cycle.
